Kingspan has launched a new raised access floor panel with a 57% reduction in embodied carbon, and, as a Tier 1 supplier and installer of Kingspan access floor products, Raised Floor Solutions is proud to offer it to customers.
RMG600+ has been designed for the commercial office industry and forms part of the group’s new Lower Embodied Carbon (LEC) range. The panel contains the lowest amount of embodied carbon of any access floor panel produced by the company and is evidence of its on-going commitment to decarbonising the built environment.
As highlighted by Kingspan’s sustainability programme, Planet Passionate, the construction phase of buildings, and the creation of related build materials, is responsible for 11% of all global energy-related carbon emissions – referred to as ‘embodied carbon’. Reducing emissions in the built environment is critical to limiting warming to 1.5ºC by 2050, as laid out by the IPCC.
The new RMG600+ access floor panel has -3.04kg of CO2e (A1-A3), which is 57% less embodied carbon (A1-C) compared to panels in the standard range*, as independently verified by Once Click LCA. The reduction has been achieved through the use of low-carbon steel, a minimum of 86% recycled material and harnessing renewable energy for the production of the panel.
The low carbon steel is produced using an electric arc furnace (EAF) that uses electricity as its energy source, rather than the coke used in a traditional bast-furnace, and 90% recycled steel.
The launch of RMG600+ and future products in the LEC range, mark the company’s progress towards achieving Net Zero Carbon manufacturing by 2030 and a 50% reduction in carbon intensity in its primary supply chain – two targets set out in it’s 10-year sustainability strategy, Planet Passionate.
Says Debra Smith, Kingspan Data & Flooring’s Divisional Head of Sustainability: “Existing buildings and construction are responsible for 39% of annual energy and process -related carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions globally. At Kingspan we aim to contribute to a net zero carbon built environment by minimising our climate – related impacts across our value chain, with the launch of our new Kingspan RMG600+ as part of our Lower Embodied Carbon range.”
Like Raised Floor Solutions, Kingspan is also utilising BIM to lower emissions.
Donagh Nolan, Kingspan Data and Flooring’s Divisional Operations Director says, “We have been manufacturing for 120 years and this is one of those truly important advances, which we think will be transformative both for our business and for our clients’ projects. As part of our broader sustainability commitments, we continuously enhance and upgrade our products. To deliver this, we employ a dedicated team of expert BIM (Building Information Modelling) engineers, advanced technical professionals, sustainability experts and manufacturing specialists.“
