Composite Concrete Floor System for Garstang Care Home

The composite concrete floor contract for a new residential care home in Garstang has been awarded to Raised Floor Solutions.

Raised Floor Solutions will deliver composite metal decking and reinforced concrete floor slabs across three storeys of the new £7million Bowgreave Rise ‘Extra Care’ Home, including the roof. The project was awarded to RFS by the main contractor.

The new facility will provide specialised support for people with dementia along with mainstream residential facilities and will be constructed on the site of the existing Bowgreave Rise Home for Older People, which is currently being rebuilt as a modern new facility within the Home’s extensive grounds.

The extra care building will provide 65 one and two bedroom apartments alongside a flexible form of support for the elderly and those with disabilities which can evolve as their needs change over time.

The contract will be fulfilled by two divisions within Raised Floor Solutions. Metal Deck, the steel decking contractor division, will supply and install 2752m2 of Kingspan Multideck MD60 with gauges of 1.0mm and 1.2mm. This incorporates approximately 170m2 which will be used for the construction of the metal roof.

Metcon, RFS’s concrete flooring contractor division, will then cast a 150mm concrete floor slab on the metal decking which is reinforced with steel mesh and given a combination of easy float and power float finishes.

What is a Composite Concrete Floor System?

A composite concrete floor system is a type of formwork used in construction. It comprises sheets of profiled metal floor decking which are fixed between the beams of a steel frame building. A concrete floor slab is then cast in situ on the metal decking and reinforced with either steel mesh or steel fibres.

Both steel and concrete are frequently used in the construction of buildings. When combined, they offer greater load bearing capabilities, better fire performance and improved durability than when used in isolation.

Designing Composite Concrete Floor Systems

Metal Deck and Metcon benefit from the expertise and experience of RFS’s in-house design team who utilise BIM and the latest Kingspan software to design a composite concrete floor system solutions for clients.

RFS will value engineer a project to provide clients with the most economic solution, whilst ensuring the delivery of a high performance design that meets the essential load bearing and fire requirements of the project and is backed by PII.
