An Artists Impression of the new Jamea Education Centre in Preston for which RFS will supply and install composite concrete flooring


A striking new madrassa for the Muslim community in Preston is under construction with composite concrete floors being supplied and installed by Raised Floor Solutions.

Raised Floor Solutions has been awarded the contract to design, supply and install steel decking and composite concrete floors for the complex building, the work of leading architecture practice David Cox Architects.

The new multi-purpose Jamea Education Centre acts as both school and community centre and comprises classrooms accommodating up to 440 pupils as well as ‘function’ rooms used for prayers, recitals, lectures and a youth club, plus a stunning atrium.

The concrete floor system contract will be fulfilled by two of Raised Floor Solutions’ specialist contracting divisions working seamlessly to offer the client a packaged flooring solution.

Metaldeck Steel Decking contractors will supply and install 2,443m2 of 1.2mm Kingspan Multideck MD60.

The concrete floor design and construction will be undertaken by Metcon Concrete Floors. The composite concrete floor contractors will cast a C35 concrete floor slab on the metal decking which is reinforced with A252 steel mesh. This will then receive an SR2 power float finish.

Metaldeck’s steel decking installers will start on site in mid-June.

What is a concrete floor system?

Concrete floor systems comprise of sheets of steel floor decking that are laid horizontally between the beams of a steel frame structure.

On to these metal decking profiles are laid grids of steel mesh which act as floor reinforcement. A concrete floor slab is then cast on top of the steel decking.

As the steel deck sheet is moulded during manufacture to form a profile (sometimes described as corrugated) and features indentations, the concrete bonds to the metal. Together, the steel deck sheet and reinforced concrete form a high performance composite concrete floor slab structure which is capable of accommodating heavy static and dynamic loads.

The Kingspan technical handbook offers dimensions and span widths of all of its composite steel deck systems. There are also Kingspan downloads of each of its steel decking profiles that include span widths, dimension diagrams and fire performance detail.
