Raised Floor Solutions has been awarded the contract to design, supply and install composite flooring for the construction of a new £11.1m industrial development in Sutton Coldfield.
Forge Industrial Park in Minworth will provide 11 new high-quality industrial units on a 3.13 acre site eight miles north of Birmingham City Centre. The scheme offers easy access to the A38 dual carriageway which links to junctions 5 and 6 of the M6.
Raised Floor Solutions is currently working on four of the new industrial units. To enable the main contractor client to keep to a strict construction timeline, RFS will install two units per visit.
Delivering the composite flooring works on site are Raised Floor Solutions’ specialist steel decking and concrete flooring divisions, Metaldeck and Metcon.
By working in partnership, the two divisions will provide the client with a seamless composite flooring solution.
Steel mesh reinforcement panels will be laid on the metal decking. Metcon will then cast a 130mm in situ concrete floor slab on to the metal flooring.
The concrete floor will be given a power float finish with Metcon bringing in multiple teams of composite flooring installers overnight to ensure timely delivery of the completed composite slab.
Completion of the Industrial Park is scheduled for November this year.
What is Composite Flooring?
Composite flooring is composed of different types of material to achieve specific construction goals, usually to create a floor solution that is more durable, cost effective and often simpler to install than alternatives.
When used in reference to steel frame construction, composite flooring is the amalgamation of steel decking and reinforced concrete. Together, the two materials create a structurally sound building foundation that is lightweight, durable, fast to install and competitively priced compared to other methods.
Composite flooring is often specified for the construction of large building projects, such as industrial units, multi-storey car parks, multi-storey residential buildings and commercial offices and also retail stores.
The floor slab comprises of sheets of steel decking laid between the beams of a steel frame structure. The metal flooring is fixed to the beam using shear studs by stud welding operatives. Concrete is pumped onto the steel decking and a concrete floor slab is cast in situ. The concrete floor slab is reinforced either with sheets of steel mesh or with steel fibres that are added to the concrete mix.
The composite steel and concrete solution delivers the dual advantages of the tensile strength of steel and the compressive strength of concrete.
