The specialist composite metal decking contractor division within Raised Floor Solutions has secured the flooring construction contract for a new multi-million-pound hospital ward at Darent Valley Hospital in Dartford.

Awarded by the steel contractor, the project will see Metal Deck supply and install just under 1,000m2 of trapezoidal composite metal decking for the new state-of-the-art facility.

The new ward will house eighteen single occupant rooms and used to treat Covid-19 patients and others with infectious diseases. The rooms will all be en suite and will include a special observation point for staff, allowing patients to be easily monitored.

Plans were approved at emergency committee and the new ‘L’ shaped building will be connected to the main hospital by a new corridor.

Work on the new building has commenced and completion is scheduled for the end of this year.

What is Composite Metal Decking?

Composite metal decking is another name for metal deck or steel deck when specified for use in the construction of reinforced composite floor slabs.

Reinforced composite floors slabs are frequently used in conjunction with steel frame as a cost and time efficient method of constructing multi-storey buildings, such as hospitals, offices, residential apartments, shopping centres and multi-storey car parks.

Metal deck is manufactured in galvanised steel, shaped into profiles and cut into sheets.  The depth of the profile specified is dependent on the required performance of the finished composite floor slab and is influenced by factors including load and fire performance and unpropped span width.
