Composite Slabs for Sheffield Apartments

Raised Floor Solutions has completed the contract to design, supply and install composite slabs for the construction of a new apartment scheme in Sheffield.

Victoria Gardens is a new build development of 14 one, two and three-bedroom apartments situated in the grounds of Victoria House; a Victorian mansion on Manchester Road within the Broomhill Conservation Area.

Victoria House was recently refurbished and converted into luxury apartments after being used as NHS offices and a training facility for several years.

The new build residential scheme will replace an outdated modular building and has been designed to sit below the tree line and within the undulating terrain so as to minimise visibility from outside the site.

Raised Floor Solutions was appointed by the project’s main contractor and started on site in March.  The composite slabs were delivered by two RFS divisions working seamlessly to provide the client with a packaged composite slab solution and the benefit of one point of contact.

Metal Deck, the steel decking contractor division, was on site first to supply and install 1,344m2 of Kingspan Multideck MD60 with a 0.9mm gauge over each of the five floors. Metal Deck also completed stud welding works.

Metcon, RFS’s concrete floor contractor division, completed the installation of the composite concrete floor system by casting 140mm concrete floor slabs on the steel decking. The composite slabs were reinforced with A393 steel mesh and given either an easy float or power float finish according to location.

The apartments are due for completion in September this year.

What is a Composite Slab?

A composite slab is a type of formwork used in construction. It is also referred to as ‘composite concrete floor system’ or ‘concrete on steel decking’.

A composite slab consists of profiled steel decking onto which is cast an in-situ concrete floor slab reinforced with either steel mesh or steel fibres.  The steel decking is fixed in place, usually to a steel beam, using shear studs and thru-deck welding techniques. Concrete sets around the studs creating the composite action. Indentations in the steel decking help the metal and concrete bond and share the load.

Composite slabs are a time and cost-efficient form of construction. Compared to more traditional construction methods, the combination of composite slabs and steel frame is relatively lightweight resulting in reduced foundation requirements.
