Metal Deck Contract for New Helicopter Logistics Base

Metal deck has won the contract to supply and install composite steel decking for the construction of a new logistics centre for Leonardo Helicopters in Yeovil.

The building has been designed by UMC Architects and will be used to store aircraft parts and assemblies that supply aircraft assembly lines and in-service helicopters around the world. It will replace an existing 1960’s warehouse which is deemed to be outdated and not energy efficient.  The new facility will allow Leonardo Helicopters to centralise its operations, which are previously conducted in various locations on site and around Yeovil.

The new logistics centre has a floor plate of just under 20,000 sq ft and will incorporate offices within the build.

Metal Deck was appointed by the main contractor.  The team will supply and install 2,825m2 of Kingspan Multideck MD60.

About Metal Deck

Metal deck is the steel decking contractor division within flooring specialist Raised Floor Solutions. Metal Deck is an approved supplier and installer of Kingspan Multideck, regarded as Europe’s leading manufacturer and supplier of steel floor decking.

Steel floor decking is a profiled sheet of steel which is manufactured in various profiles for use in composite concrete floors, a type of formwork common in construction.

About Composite Floor Construction

Metal decking is one of the main components in the construction of a composite floor slab. Metal deck is manufactured from light weight steel and available in a range of different depth profiles and span widths. During construction, it is installed between the beams of a steel frame building and fixed in place using shear studs in a process called ‘stud welding’.

Concrete is cast on top of the steel decking and allowed to harden forming a composite floor slab. The concrete is reinforced with either steel mesh or steel fibres; this helps control cracking and promotes longevity of the formwork.
