Metal Deck & Concrete Floors for £9.2m Health Centre

Metal Deck and Metcon have been awarded the contract to supply and install steel floor decking and reinforced concrete floors for the construction of a new £9.2m ‘all-electric’ health centre in North Tyneside.

Hadrian Health Centre is a purpose-built multi-storey health and community services facility for those living in the Wallsend area. The new building will become the permanent home of two local practices and the community services division of Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.

Once built, it will provide consulting and treatment rooms, dedicated training areas and parking and enable the provision of an extended range of services to patients and healthcare professionals.

Work on the three-storey building began in May this year with the steel frame structure now in place.  The project is anticipated to take around 15 months to complete with opening scheduled for Summer 2022.

It will be built to modern, environmentally sound state-of-the-art specification, which includes the installation of solar photovoltaics on the roof designed to limit the electricity required from the grid.

Metal Deck and Metcon, the steel decking contractor and concrete flooring contractor divisions within Raised Floor Solutions, were appointed by the main contractor.

Metal Deck will supply and install Kingspan Multideck MD60 0.9mm over each of the building’s three storeys; an area of 2774m2.  Metcon will then cast a 140mm concrete floor slab over the same area, reinforced with A142 steel mesh and with a power float finish.

About Metal Decking

Metal decking, also known as metal deck or steel decking, is a sheet of thin gauge steel that is manufactured in a range of lengths (span widths) and shapes (profiles) for use as formwork in construction, particularly for floors and roofs.

Our expert knowledge article ‘A Guide to Steel Decking’ provides a wealth of information on steel decking, it’s manufacture and use as well as further information on composite floor construction.
