Metal Decking Panels for Industrial Units

Metal Deck has completed the supply and installation of metal decking panels for a development of two new industrial units in Beckton.

Gemini Business Park is an established development of warehouses, logistics hubs and distribution centres at the heart of the Thames Gateway and adjacent to London City Airport. The development is just a mile from the A13/A406 Interchange linking it to East London and the City, J30 of the M25 and J4 of the M11.

Together, the two units will provide 40,746 sq ft of versatile space and are available to let with completion scheduled for Q4 2022.

Metal Deck, the steel decking contractor division of Raised Floor Solutions, was contracted to supply and install metal decking panels for the build.

Each of the units incorporates mezzanine office space to the first-floor level. Additional facilities include 10m clear internal storage space and 50kN sq m floor loading, multi-level access doors, car parking and electric vehicle charging points.

The Metal Deck team started on site in April to supply and install 442m2 of metal decking panels with a profile depth of 60mm and a gauge of 1.2mm.

What are metal decking panels?

Metal decking panels are sheets of profiled steel used in the construction of floors and roofs in modern multi-storey buildings.

Steel is cut and shaped with the resulting metal decking panel often combined with concrete and steel mesh or steel fibre reinforcement to create a composite concrete floor system.

Composite slabs are capable of achieving calculated load and fire ratings that enable a building to meet the specific requirements of its end users.

Composite concrete floor systems are specified along with steel frame structures for the construction of buildings such as hospitals, shopping malls, apartment buildings, offices and, as is the case here, industrial units.

Specifying steel deck and reinforced in situ concrete floor slabs in construction can result in overall project time being reduced. Other benefits include:

  • Metal flooring panels create a safe platform and overhead cover for other trades working on the construction project
  • Cost savings can be made as a result of shortened construction times and reduced foundation requirements
  • Metal decking panels have exact profiles meaning the deck can be stacked neatly on site
