PROJECT UPDATE – ACCESS FLOORS AT TECHNIQUE, LONDON

The raised floor system installation at Technique in London is well underway as these latest photos show.

Technique is an £80m new commercial office scheme being redeveloped within Laser House near the Barbican in London. It was originally a gin distillery and bank HQ with a distinctly 1960’s aesthetic.

The comprehensive refurbishment will see the building transformed into 74,000 sq ft of state-of-the-art sustainable ‘human-centric’ office space, and the installation of a raised floor system is an important part of the metamorphosis.

Access Flooring, the specialist raised floors division within RFS, has been contracted to design, supply and install Kingspan Access Flooring over the building’s five floors, including the ground floor.

Raised floor systems comprise of an elevated floor that is laid above a sub floor forming a void in which a building’s cabling and pipework infrastructure can be concealed.

The access floor system involves the installation of square panels on steel pedestals in a grid formation. The panels can be specified to withstand different static or dynamic loads and can also be pre-bonded in different finishes, such as vinyl, natural wood, granite, glass or marble.

Once installed, panels can be lifted as required to allow easy access to cabling and pipework for maintenance, upgrades or reconfiguration.

For more information about how access floor systems work and the benefits they deliver, read our comprehensive knowledge article.

At Technique, the sub floor to the ground, first and second floors has been constructed from concrete. On levels three and four, 65mm acoustic flooring has been installed below the raised access floor.

Access Flooring has installed a Kingspan RG5 raised floor system with a plywood overlay to the core areas. This is coupled with a Kingspan RMG600 raised floor system with factory fitted air seal gaskets to minimise any air leakage from the underfloor air plenum. Both finished floor heights are 400mm above the sub floor.

When designing the raised floor system, Access Flooring also specified and installed additional stringers to enable the air curtain to be installed within the raised access floor void.
