Metcon, the concrete floor contractor division of Raised Floor Solutions, has completed its largest single concrete pour on suspended composite steel decking since the company’s inception, twenty years ago in 2003.
The team is on site at 70 Bridgewater Street in central Manchester having secured the steel deck and concrete floor contract for the £28M redevelopment of the former Eversheds Sutherland building.
Work began on site in August last year, with the building’s façade due to be radically updated and internal accommodation configured to provide BREEAM Excellent rating. The redevelopment includes the addition of two further storeys, increasing accommodation by 30,000sq ft.
Following the supply and installation of 5,226m2 (56,250sq ft) of Kingspan Multideck MD60 by Metal Deck, sister steel deck contractor division, Metcon moved on site to complete the concrete works.
The team, with excellent concrete supply and support from Cemex, achieved a record single pour of 1,530m2 (16,450sq ft) late last month on level seven. A further two pours remain.
The concrete slabs are reinforced with Kingspan approved Dramix steel fibres and have been given an easyfloat finish.

About steel fibre reinforced concrete
The use of steel fibres removes the need to hoist and place traditional mesh reinforcement leading to a reduction in the concrete programme time by as much as two days per pour. Other benefits include increased crack control.
Bekaert steel fibres are added to the concrete mix and can be prepared off site. Metcon is able to calculate a quality assured concrete mix design, which is supported by its £5M professional indemnity insurance.
