Reinforced Concrete Floors for Lake District Residence

Raised Floor Solutions has completed work on the design, delivery and installation of steel deck and reinforced concrete floors for a striking new super home on the banks of Lake Windermere. 

The superior 14,000 sq ft new residence was designed by Manchester based architecture practice, Four Architects.

The luxurious bespoke home comprises numerous reception rooms, seven bedrooms, a home office and stunning leisure suite incorporating a 15 metre swimming pool.

Also under construction is a boat house and the provision of guest accommodation in a gate lodge. 

The steel deck and reinforced concrete floor project was delivered by two divisions within Raised Floor Solutions. Working together, they provided the main contractor client with the seamless delivery of a complete composite concrete floor system.  Having one dedicated project manager for both services also streamlined the communications process.

First on site was steel decking contractor, Metal Deck.  Metal Deck supplied and installed 796m2 (8,568 sq ft) of Kingspan Multideck MD60 with 1mm and 1.2mm gauges.

Once the metal floor was complete, concrete floor contractor Metcon cast a 130mm concrete floor slab. The slab was reinforced with A193 steel mesh and given an easy float finish. 

About Reinforced Concrete Floors

Reinforced concrete floors are commonly used in the construction of modern buildings, including multi-storey structures such as car parks, commercial offices, hospitals and residential apartments, as well as single storey structures such as industrial warehouses or distribution centres.

They comprise of sheets of steel mesh which are installed horizontally on a sub-structure around which is cast a concrete floor slab. Sometimes, reinforced concrete floors are constructed using concrete which has steel fibres added to the mix.

Steel is a durable and relatively lightweight material which has excellent tensile strength. Concrete has compressive strength. Both steel and concrete react expand and contract in response to decreases or increases in temperature in the same way, therefore avoiding internal damage to the concrete floor slab.

When combined in the construction of a reinforced concrete floor slab, steel and concrete complement each other’s weaknesses. The Steel therefore improves the structural rigidity and load bearing capability of the concrete floor.
