Steel Deck & Concrete for Aintree A&E

The steel deck and reinforced concrete floor contract for the new £16m extension to Liverpool’s Aintree University Hospital has been awarded to Raised Floor Solutions.

The Hospital is getting a new three-storey extension to its A&E and theatre departments to help improve the services offered to an increasing volume of patients.

The A&E facilities are located to the south of the hospital estate in close proximity to the Elective Care Centre and the urgent care and trauma centre.

The extension will provide additional assessment areas and allow an internal reconfiguration and expansion of the theatre department with existing theatres being refurbished and two new hybrid theatres created to allow real time diagnostic imaging during the operational procedure.

The upgraded department will also provide specialist emergency stroke care alongside the existing A&E on the ground floor, and three additional ambulance drop off bays.

Steel deck deliveries to site have taken place this month with Raised Floor Solutions’ steel deck contractor, Metal Deck, due on site imminently to commence the composite concrete floor construction.

Metal Deck will supply and install a total of 1,408m2 of Kingspan steel deck for the project.

On the first floor, Metal Deck has specified long spanning Multideck MD146 at 1.5mm to ensure the finished composite concrete floor system has adequate load capacity to accommodate the hospital’s heavy operating machinery.

Kingspan Multideck MD50 has been specified for the second floor which will house standard offices and patient consultation rooms.

On completion of the steel deck, sister division Metcon concrete floor contractors will commence the installation of the reinforced concrete floor slabs. For the first floor this will be a 350mm concrete slab with A393 steel mesh reinforcement. On the first floor, the slab is a narrower 175mm with A252 steel mesh reinforcement.  A combination of power float and easy float finishes will be provided.

Construction of the new extension is anticipated by Spring 2023.

About Multideck MD146 Steel Deck

Kingspan Multideck MD146 is a deep trapezoidal profile steel deck capable of achieving best in class unpropped spans of up to 6m.

Multideck MD146 is recognised as a direct alternative to pre-cast concrete planks with the additional benefits of being lightweight and quick to install.

MD146 is installed to the top flange of the steel beam as with any other steel deck profile and can be designed compositely using 195mm shear connectors. When specified as part of a composite concrete floor system, MD146 requires 31% less concrete than the next best spanning 80mm steel deck and can achieve shallow floor depths of just 215mm.
