CGI of Salt Lane multi storey car park for which Metpark won the contract to supply and install composite car park decking and reinforced concrete floors

Raised Floor Solutions has been awarded the composite steel decking contract for a new £11.3 million multi-storey car park in Coventry city centre.

The contract will be delivered by the company’s specialist multi storey car park construction division, Metpark.

The new facility will provide 600 spaces over six storeys and is located on Salt Lane in the city centre, next door to the new £37 million water park.

The modern looking building has been designed by Birmingham based practice Seymour Harris Architecture to complement the architecture of adjacent Ford’s Hospital. It features a brick and wire mesh base with a striking façade of aluminium and polycarbonate ‘fins’ that float above and lift to form an entrance and exit for vehicles and visitors.

Work started this month for 18 weeks, with the Metpark team supplying and installing 13,500m2 of Kingspan Multideck MD80 XP 1.0mm.

Kingspan Multideck MD80 is the most frequently specified deck for multi-storey car park construction. It’s deeper profile enables unpropped spans of up to 5.4m and requires less concrete than any other profile to achieve a desired slab thickness, delivering both time and cost efficiencies.

The steel decking will be manufactured in Magnelis steel (branded Kingspan XP), a galvanised steel with a heavy-duty metallic coating consisting of zinc and magnesium specified for the most aggressive C4 and C5 environments. In addition to prolonging the life span of the deck, Kingspan XP can be powder coated to provide a range of soffit colours allowing car park users to distinguish between the different floor levels.

Since Raised Floor Solutions launched its Metpark division in Autumn 2017, the company has secured over 80,000m2 of steel decking on multi-storey car park across the UK.

Significant contract wins have included the provision of composite steel decking for Barons Quay retail park in Northwich (28,500m2), New Bailey NCP in Salford (14,355m2), Victoria Street in Liverpool (8,800m2) and Cutting Room Square in Manchester (3,977m2),

Says Raised Floor Solutions MD, Graham Hewitt, “Composite steel floor decking is now recognised as the ideal solution for high quality single or multi-storey car park construction.

“It’s a high quality yet fast track method of construction that suits modern architectural styles and, due to the large unpropped spans, allows the maximum number of vehicles to be accommodated within a space accelerating return on investment,” he adds
